Position Summary:

Goshen College invites applicants for the position of Success Coach, Athletics and Student Engagement. The Success Coach, Athletics and Student Engagement is a member of the Academic Success Center team, with a mission to support student success and achievement. This position carries a full caseload of students across all years while serving as the ASC’s primary point of connection with Goshen College Athletics. Rather than serving student-athletes exclusively, this coach brings an athletics-informed lens to the broader work of student engagement- building relationships, attending to the particular rhythms and pressures of student-athlete life, and bridging the athletic and academic communities on campus. The successful candidate will be relational, proactive, and committed to meeting students where they are.

Essential Functions: (Core Job Responsibilities)

• Serves as the primary point of contact for students, utilizing a holistic coaching approach to support an assigned caseload
  • Provides comprehensive, holistic support to a caseload of students by facilitating personal, academic, and professional goal setting; crafting individualized student success plans.
  • Conducts personalized outreach to identify academic and socio-emotional challenges early and connect students to appropriate support.
  • Recommends opportunities for personal and academic growth, as well as co-curricular activities that align with individual interests.
  • Maintains an in-depth understanding of college policies and procedures, disseminating information to students.
  • Encourages participation in high-impact activities and known initiatives that support student persistence.
  • Emphasizes confidentiality, university policy compliance, and a culture of care within all direct student interactions.
• Serves as the ASC’s primary point of connection with Goshen College Athletics
  • Attends weekly athletic department meetings to stay informed of team schedules, student-athlete needs, and departmental initiatives.
  • Develops and maintains strong, trust-based relationships with coaches and athletic staff to facilitate early and proactive academic support.
  • Responds to early alerts for student-athletes, serving as the primary ASC contact for academic intervention within this population.
  • Participates in athletic department onboarding for incoming student-athletes.
  • Tracks academic progress data for student-athlete populations and communicates trends to the Senior Director.
  • Represents the ASC at select athletic events to build visibility and connection with the student-athlete community.
  • Plans, coordinates, and co-leads the summer academic preseason experience for incoming student-athletes.
• Assists a diverse student population with the transition to college and beyond
  • Assists with onboarding new students to their college experience.
  • Serves as an active member of the orientation team to support initiatives and function as a go-to person for students in their transition to college.
  • Communicates student support initiatives early in the college experience to ensure student participation, inclusion, and engagement on campus.
• Provides general support to the Academic Success Center
  • Assists with front desk coverage and test proctoring.
  • Participates in campus initiatives such as affinity groups, first-generation, or 21st-century scholar programming.

Education and Experience:

• A bachelor’s degree in education, social work, kinesiology, sport management, or a related field is required.
• Prior experience working with college students in a coaching, advising, or student affairs capacity.
• Experience working with student-athletes or within an athletic department context preferred.

Skills and Competencies:

Required:

• Demonstrated ability to build strong, trust-based relationships with students and institutional partners across departments.
• Strong intercultural competency and experience working with diverse student populations.
• Willingness to learn new things and desire to problem-solve and find solutions.
• Effective communication and organizational skills.
• Strong time management and prioritization skills, balancing caseload and programmatic responsibilities efficiently.
• Demonstrated customer service skills and high degree of professionalism.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Proficiency with Google Workspace and Excel spreadsheets.

Preferred:

• Knowledge of advising techniques and academic curriculum.
• Prior experience with athletics

Special Requirements:

• The position is a 10-month contract (.83 FTE).
• Occasional evening or weekend hours may be needed for orientation events, admissions events, athletic events, and other programming.

Physical Demands:

• Ability to lift light loads (up to 25 pounds).
• Prolonged sitting and use of keyboard.
• Ability to complete primary tasks by viewing computer screen(s) for the majority of any given workday (extensive use of computer technology).
• Considerable phone use and operation of copier and other standard office equipment.

Work Environment/Environmental Conditions:

• Work will primarily take place in a standard indoor office environment, with regular time spent in athletic facilities and other campus spaces.
